the Sacrament of Confirmation
Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the “sacraments of Christian initiation,” whose unity must be safeguarded. It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. For “by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.” (CCC 1285)
At JDW, the Confirmation class is for those beginning 9th grade. A candidate may enroll in the Confirmation class provided he or she has completed faith formation instructions either at JDW or another parish, if transferred; or enrolled in a Catholic School. Confirmation classes include instructions, prayer and retreats; as well as participation in Youth Ministry events and activities. Primarily, the candidate’s regular use of the sacraments, especially the active participation in the Sunday Eucharist is a necessary element in determining a candidate’s desire and readiness for the sacrament of Confirmation in the Catholic Church. Sign up for Confirmation classes, or for more information, contact Tracey Smith in the Youth Ministry Office, 410-414-8304, ext. 22.
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
RCIA is a collaborative process of study, exploration, faith sharing, and faith formation for non-baptized adults interested in membership in the Catholic Church, as well as previously baptized Christians who wish to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Communion and Confirmation.
RCIA classes are for inquiring adults interested in becoming a member of the Church, their sponsors, and other RCIA team members. The group meets Sunday mornings from September to May for approximately two hours (8-10AM). Just because you start RCIA, doesn’t mean that you are committed to finish. If you are merely curious about what Catholicism is, please feel free to come. All are welcome. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is celebrated mainly at the Easter Vigil and throughout the year as needed. Sign up for RCIA, or for more information, contact the office, 410-414-8304 or send an email to Deacon Ron.
Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC)
Jesus the Divine Word offers the equivalent of RCIA for children, known as RCIC. The two-year formation is offered to children ages 7-14 who have not been baptized or previously baptized Christians who wish to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church. The Rite of Christian Initiation for Children is celebrated mainly at the Easter Vigil at the end of the second year. Sign up for RCIC, or for more information, contact the DRE, Karen Burns, in the Religious Education Office, 410-414-8304, ext. 23.
