The mission of the Reader/Lector is to "proclaim God's living word." Through the word, God speaks to us and calls us to respond in faith and love.
Who may become Readers? Parishioners who are practicing Catholics in good standing with the Church and who are able to volunteer time and talent and participate in the work of God (liturgy) in our parish. Readers are called to be people of deep faith who believe that the word of God is transformative, truly the divine message from God the Father.
Training is provided by the Archdiocese of Washington's Office of Worship. A secondary, practical training, is then scheduled in the parish to orient the reader with procedures and responsibilities specific to our parish.
Prior to serving in ministry, Readers are recognized and received by the parish community at Mass; and the pastor will confer his blessing. Readers serve in the parish for three years; renewable for an additional three years.
They are scheduled to serve at least one Sunday Mass a month; weekday Mass if available, and other Masses, such as funerals, weddings and other liturgies, as able.
Youth, 8th grade and higher, are highly encouraged to participate in our liturgical celebrations.
